Senator Mitchell Honored by Northern Women

January 21, 2003 - Former Senator George Mitchell was honored for his tireless work for peace in Ireland at the Northern Ireland Women’s Initiative (NIWI) January 21 event in New York.

NIWI founder and president Maureen Murray said, “The Northern Ireland Women’s Initiative (NIWI) is honored to have Senator Mitchell’s support in our efforts to promote full and equal participation of women in the political leadership of Northern Ireland. In doing so, the Senator continues to promote the fulfillment of the Good Friday Agreement and its promise to the people of Northern Ireland.”

Over 70 people attended the fundraiser. Celebrities including Ciaran Hinds, Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson were on the host committee.

March 8, 2003 - DemocraShe Director Bronagh Hinds was the special guest speaker at the IBO March dinner in support of the Northern Ireland Women’s Initiative (NIWI). The 1999 European Woman of the Year, Bronagh, was a key negotiator in the Multi-Party Talks which led to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

Also present was Patricia Lewsley (SDLP), a supporter of the NIWI and who has led two rounds of training with NIWI in the SDLP. Patricia is on the Front-bench SDLP team for the Review of the Good Friday Agreement.

Celebration with Sin-é

A cocktail evening was held to celebrate the conclusion of the recent training progam for the approaching Northern Ireland Assembly Elections.

On Wednesday November 12th 2003, the Northern Ireland Women's Initiative hosted a special evening with honorary chair Christine Quinn, New York City Councilmember; Maureen Murray, President NIWI; and Bronagh Hinds, the Director of NIWI's training program. World-renowned musician Eileen Ivers gave a special guest performance.
